Privacy

BGP Map has no accounts, no analytics scripts, no advertising and no cookies. This page says what the server records about a visit, how long it keeps it and what it does not do.

What is recorded

Visits are counted on this server, to see how much of the traffic is people and how much is crawlers. One line is written for each request: the page, the status of the answer, how long it took, the country Cloudflare reports and the site the visitor came from. Those lines are deleted after about a week. Only daily totals stay, with no individual lines in them.

The address of a visitor is not written down. It is turned into twelve characters of a hash, together with the browser string and a salt that is thrown away at midnight. That is enough to count people once a day and too little to recognise anyone the next day or to work back to an address.

The small request on every page

When a page opens, the browser makes one request to /px. It carries the address of the page and nothing else, and it is how a browser is told apart from a program that only fetches the HTML. There is no cookie behind it.

Route changes

To notice route changes the site keeps, for a prefix whose map has been opened, its origin, its upstreams and the number of collector peers that see it. Nothing in that record says who opened the map.

Cloudflare and the host

The site is served through Cloudflare, which sees each request as any proxy does. The web server's own access log records requests as they arrive from Cloudflare, so it holds Cloudflare's addresses rather than the visitor's, and the host rotates it.

What is not done

How the maps work is on the About page. The conditions for using the site are on the terms page.
